Introduction
Dr. Christopher Barley’s medical career has been dedicated to addressing both the concerns of his individual patients and, at the same time, the political issues and causes that describe the nature of medical care in our society and throughout the world. Dr. Barley, a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, has built a highly respected private practice in New York City. After attending medical school at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., he completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 1996 at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Barley’s training at the New York Presbyterian Hospital also included extensive training at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Hospital, a world leader in cancer care, and at the Hospital for Special Surgery, one of the world’s finest centers for treatment of joint diseases and musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Barley has been in the private practice of General Medicine since 1996. Dr. Barley’s central belief is that medical care at the highest level takes time, with the utmost attention given to detail. To this end, he has joined the Independent Doctors of NY (IDNY), an organization whose members, some of New York’s most esteemed physicians, do not participate in managed care plans. Dr. Barley currently serves as the organization’s vice-president. Additionally, as a participating physician in both Corporate Care and The Executive Registry at New York Presbyterian Hospital, he is part of an international network of physicians and hospitals that facilitate high level care throughout the world through referrals and emergency intervention. As vice-president of Citta, a not for profit organization with hospitals in India, Nepal, and Mexico, he has overseen the delivery of health care to underserved communities in the Third World. As a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the prestigious Cornell/Weill School of Medicine as well as an Assistant Attending Physician at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Barley teaches medical students, interns, and residents in the techniques of physical diagnosis. In addition, he keeps abreast of the latest in insurance and health care policy by serving on committees and boards with in the NYPH system as well as providing health care policy advice to local, state, and national politicians. Dr. Barley’s practice also benefits from his role as scientific advisor to numerous biotech companies, enabling him to be on the forefront of new developments.
