Helen Shim-Chang, MD

Dr. Helen Shim-Chang is a graduate of Smith College, where she was on the Dean’s List. Following the completion of her undergraduate studies, Dr. Shim worked as a research assistant in the study of tropical disease at The Rockefeller University (1985-1987). She then attended Drexel University College of Medicine (formerly Hahnemann University School of Medicine) graduating in 1991. Dr. Shim did her internship year in Internal Medicine (1991-1992) and her residency in Anatomic Pathology (1992 to 1995) , both at the Mount Sinai Hospital. Subsequently, she did a two-year fellowship in Dermatopathology (1995-1997) and a residency in Dermatology (1997-2000) at Mount Sinai. She is triple Board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Dermatopathology and Dermatology and is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatopathology and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons.

Dr. Shim has been practicing dermatology since 2000 and was on the faculty of the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology at the Mount Sinai Health System until the fall of 2017 when she opened her private practice. Dr. Shim continues to teach dermatology residents in both dermatopathology and dermoscopy as a voluntary clinical assistant professor at Mount Sinai. While at Mt. Sinai, she served as the Residency Program Director from 2006 to 2009 and was chief of the Outpatient Dermatology Clinic from 2006 to 2012. Dr. Shim was the Chief of the Inpatient Consult Service from 2015-2017. She served on the Appointments and Promotions Committee for the Medical School and on its Admissions Committee. Dr. Shim also served on the Faculty Council for the Department of Dermatology.

Dr. Shim has lectured both locally and nationally on various topics including blistering skin diseases, gynecologic disorders, cutaneous changes of menopause, unusual and severe skin diseases of inpatients as well as on challenges of skin pathology diagnosis. She has published several peer-reviewed articles and has been named Teacher of the Year multiple times by the residents at the Mount Sinai Department of Dermatology.
